How the citizenship test works
The citizenship test checks knowledge of the legal and social order and living conditions in Germany. The questions come from a public catalogue — so you can learn all of them in advance. The test itself is in German.
Structure
| Part | questions in the test | in the catalogue |
|---|---|---|
| General questions | 30 | 300 |
| Questions about your state | 3 | 10 per state |
Time allowed: 60 minutes. Each question has four answers, exactly one of which is correct. Passed with at least 17 of 33 correct answers.
“Leben in Deutschland” test
Final test of the orientation course: passed from 15 correct answers; from 17 it also counts as proof for naturalisation.
Fees, registration, test centres and exemptions (such as who does not have to take the test) are deliberately not listed here: they change, and only what the BAMF and your naturalisation authority say is binding.
Einbürgerungstest online üben is a private learning service. It is not operated by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), is not affiliated with it and has not been commissioned by it. You can practise here — you take the citizenship test itself at an approved test centre. The official BAMF service, including the official question catalogue and the online test centre, can be found at bamf.de.
